ByteDance launches Douyin in September 2016 and TikTok internationally in September 2017, buys musical.ly in November 2017 and merges it into TikTok in August 2018, giving the app its US teen base and a Culver City headquarters. The Creator Fund opens in July 2020 with 200 million dollars and a pledged 1 billion dollars, pays pennies per thousand views, and is replaced by the Creativity Program in 2023 and the Creator Rewards Program in 2024, which pay only on videos longer than one minute. Congress passes a divest or ban law in April 2024 and the app goes dark for hours in January 2025. On 22 January 2026 the TikTok USDS Joint Venture closes with Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX holding 15 percent each and ByteDance 19.9 percent, ending the ban risk for US creators. TikTok Shop, launched in September 2023, is the platform's main creator commerce rail.
