Instagram launches in October 2010 and Facebook announces on April 9, 2012 that it will buy it for approximately 1 billion dollars in cash and Facebook shares, closing in September 2012 and moving it to Menlo Park. Instagram never runs a broad ad revenue share for feed posts, so its creators earn through brand sponsorships rather than platform payouts; that gap is what builds the influencer marketing industry and the affiliate rails such as LTK and ShopMy. Reels launches in August 2020 to copy TikTok, and Meta's 1 billion dollar creator pledge of July 14, 2021 funds Reels Play bonuses that end in March 2023. Affiliate tools arrive in June 2021, invitation only Reels bonuses return in 2024 and 2025, and the Edits video app launches on April 22, 2025. Instagram passes 3 billion monthly users in September 2025 and remains the primary sponsorship platform for creators such as Alix Earle and Emma Chamberlain.
