Facebook is founded in Cambridge in February 2004 and headquartered in Menlo Park. It acquires Instagram in 2012 and becomes Meta Platforms in 2021. Facebook opens in stream ads to video creators in 2017, launches Stars tipping in 2019 to 2020, and on July 14, 2021 pledges 1 billion dollars in creator bonuses across Facebook and Instagram through 2022. Facebook Gaming absorbs Mixer's community when Microsoft closes that service in July 2020. On October 2, 2024 Meta folds in stream ads, Ads on Reels and the performance bonus into a single Facebook Content Monetization program. Meta says Facebook pays creators nearly 3 billion dollars in 2025, up 35 percent, and on March 18, 2026 launches Creator Fast Track, guaranteeing 1,000 to 3,000 dollars a month for three months to creators arriving from other platforms. Facebook matters less to young creators than Instagram or TikTok but is the largest single bonus payer among Meta's apps.
