Suroosh Alvi, Shane Smith and Gavin McInnes start Vice as a Montreal magazine in 1994 and move it to Brooklyn in 2001, growing on branded content, Vice News for HBO and cable channel Viceland with Disney, A&E, Fox and TPG money that values it at 5.7 billion dollars in June 2017. Profit never arrives; Vice files for Chapter 11 on May 15, 2023 and lenders Fortress, Soros Fund Management and Monroe Capital buy the assets for 350 million dollars. In February 2024 chief executive Bruce Dixon stops publishing on Vice.com and lays off several hundred staff, leaving Vice Studios, Pulse Films and Vice TV. In 2025 the company relaunches a quarterly print magazine and rebuilds Vice News under Fortress ownership. The rung that breaks is venture priced growth on branded content revenue that never matched the valuation.
