Disney announces the purchase of Maker Studios on March 24, 2014 for 500 million dollars up front with earnouts that could lift the price to 950 million dollars if the network hit performance targets. The targets are missed and the total paid settles at roughly 675 million dollars. Layoffs, executive departures and a cull of the partner base from about 60,000 channels to roughly 1,000 follow. On May 2, 2017 Maker is folded into the newly formed Disney Digital Network in Culver City, which functions as a social marketing arm rather than a talent network and is wound down by 2019. The deal is the reference case for a studio paying a multi channel network price for audience it could not own.
