Izzie Lerer launches The Dodo in New York in January 2014 as an animal stories site and it becomes Group Nine's most watched Facebook video brand, with Group Nine citing more than 250 million social followers and 6 billion monthly video views across its brands in December 2021. Vox Media announces on December 14, 2021 that it will acquire Group Nine, whose shareholders take about a quarter of the combined company, and the deal closes in early 2022; The Dodo then sells sponsorships and licensed pet content inside Vox. Vox includes The Dodo in a 4 percent staff cut on November 30, 2023. Vox Media itself is sold in May 2026 to James Murdoch for a reported sum above 300 million dollars, and The Dodo's place in the split up group is unconfirmed.

Open questions: Vox Media's May 2026 sale to James Murdoch and the later sale of other Vox brands to Penske Media are reported by Aftermath, which does not say where The Dodo lands; the brand's current owner needs confirmation.
