Michael Mignano and Nir Zicherman found Anchor in New York in 2015 as free podcast hosting, and by 2019 it powers about 40 percent of new podcasts. Spotify buys it in February 2019 alongside Gimlet for a combined 337 million dollars. Anchor becomes Spotify for Podcasters in 2023 and Spotify for Creators in November 2024, and the Spotify Partner Program launched on 2 January 2025 pays hosts for Premium video engagement and ads. Mignano leaves Spotify in 2022 for Lightspeed. Cumulative payouts through the Partner Program are not disclosed.
