Musician Jack Conte and Sam Yam launch Patreon in San Francisco in May 2013 so fans can pay creators monthly, and it is paying creators from launch. Patreon raises 47 million dollars by 2016, buys Memberful in 2018, and reaches a 4 billion dollar valuation with a 155 million dollar round in April 2021. It cuts 13 percent of staff in 2020 and 2021 and 17 percent in September 2022, closing Dublin and Berlin offices. The take rate moves to 10 percent for new creators in 2025. Patreon passes 10 billion dollars paid to creators in August 2025 with more than 25 million paid memberships and about 2 billion dollars a year flowing to creators, podcasts alone earning 472 million dollars in 2024. It remains private in 2026.
