Alex Blumberg and Matt Lieber launch Gimlet in Brooklyn in August 2014, recording the company's own fundraising as the podcast StartUp, then producing Reply All, Homecoming and Crimetown on advertising and licensing. It raises 1.5 million dollars in seed money, a 6 million Series A in 2015 and a 15 million Series B from Stripes in 2017. Spotify announces its purchase on February 6, 2019 for 230 million dollars; staff unionize a month later and win a contract in 2021. Reply All ends June 22, 2022, Lieber and Blumberg leave that year, and on June 5, 2023 Spotify folds Gimlet and Parcast into Spotify Studios with 200 job cuts. The rung that breaks is a narrative studio whose costs the platform would not carry once exclusives stopped adding subscribers.
