Dave Portnoy starts Barstool as a free Boston print sheet in September 2003, goes web only in 2007 and builds podcasts, merchandise and gambling partnerships into 90 to 100 million dollars of 2019 revenue. The Chernin Group buys 51 percent in January 2016 at a 10 to 15 million dollar valuation and moves it to New York. Penn National pays 163 million dollars for 36 percent in January 2020 at a 450 million valuation, buys the rest in February 2023 for 388 million, then hands the whole company back to Portnoy for one dollar in August 2023 to clear the way for its ESPN Bet deal. Barstool moves to Chicago, signs a wide ranging Fox Sports deal in July 2025 and a reported eight figure Netflix deal for three video podcasts in December 2025. Call Her Daddy starts here in 2018.
