Method

The YouTube Partner Program starts in 2007 as an invitation only ad revenue share for a handful of channels and opens broadly in 2012, paying creators 55 percent of ad revenue through Google AdSense. It is the rail that first turns attention into income for MrBeast, PewDiePie, Smosh and Rhett and Link, and the model that every later platform fund copies or reacts to. Thresholds rise to 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours in 2018, and a lower tier for fan funding features arrives in 2023. Shorts ad revenue sharing joins the program in February 2023. YouTube reports more than three million participating channels in 2024 and more than 70 billion dollars paid across 2021 to 2023.
