Method
Hernan Lopez, former Fox International Channels chief, founds Wondery in West Hollywood in 2016 with 20th Century Fox seed money, building Dirty John, Dr. Death and Business Wars into a top five publisher with 40 million monthly downloads by 2018 and selling the shows to television. Amazon announces the purchase on December 30, 2020 at a reported 300 million dollars, closing February 2021, with Jen Sargent as chief executive. In August 2025 Amazon breaks the company up: narrative shows go to Audible, video to Amazon's creator group, about 110 people are laid off and Sargent leaves, with the Wondery name kept only for celebrity shows such as Armchair Expert and New Heights.
