Method

Paul Davison and Rohan Seth launch Clubhouse in San Francisco in March 2020 as invitation only audio rooms. Andreessen Horowitz leads a 12 million dollar Series A in May 2020, a Series B at 1 billion dollars in January 2021 and a Series C at about 4 billion dollars in April 2021 as Elon Musk and Oprah appear. The Creator First accelerator pays selected creators 5,000 dollars a month in 2021 and Stripe payments launch in April 2021, but the app never builds a durable payout rail. Downloads collapse after Twitter Spaces and other copies launch, and in April 2023 Clubhouse lays off more than half its staff. The rung that breaks is retention: attention that never converts into recurring income for hosts. The app still operates in 2026 at a fraction of its peak.
