Vine co founder Dom Hofmann announces a successor in December 2017, names it Byte in November 2018 and launches on 24 January 2020 in more than 40 countries. Byte promises a partner program that pays creators directly, learning from Vine's failure, but the early pool is shut in August and applied to later programs. Clash App acquires Byte in January 2021 and merges the two into Clash, later renamed Huddles, which relaunches in October 2021 and is discontinued on 3 May 2023. The rung that breaks is audience: TikTok already owns the format by the time Byte launches. Byte's New York base is not confirmed in a retrieved source.
