Amazon launches Associates in 1996, paying websites a commission for referred sales, and it becomes the default affiliate rail for bloggers and later YouTubers such as Marques Brownlee's product links. Commissions range from 1 to 20 percent by category and are cut sharply in April 2020. The Amazon Influencer Program of 2017 extends Associates to social creators with storefronts and onsite video. In 2025 Amazon bars brands from collecting both the Brand Referral Bonus and Associates commissions on the same sale.
