Shahrzad Rafati founds BroadbandTV in Vancouver in 2005 with software that identifies fan uploads of rights holders' video and monetizes them, signing the NBA in 2009 and Sony Pictures. It grows into a network taking a share of YouTube ad revenue from creator channels, and RTL Group buys 51 percent in 2013 for 36 million US dollars. By 2019 it reaches 575 million monthly viewers. The company lists on the TSX on October 28, 2020 at 16 Canadian dollars raising 172 million, as RTL sells its stake for a reported 120 million US dollars. The shares fall below one dollar by 2023 amid a dispute over withheld creator revenue, and on January 10, 2024 Rafati and Hamed Shahbazi take it private at 0.375 Canadian dollars a share, a 98 percent loss from the IPO. It operates privately in 2026.
